The goal for the United States and all the countries involved in World War II was peace. The United States wished for free elections after victory, and joined in the United Nations, unlike after World War I. Their goal was an area to diplomatically work things out instead of working them out through battle.

The United States wanted to keep communism from spreading to Western Europe . They used democracy as an excuse, overthrowing popularly elected, left-leaning, governments, with anti-communist dictators. The US was more prosperous than ever before, and authorized millions of dollars worth of aid to help rebuild Europe. The policy, known as the Marshall Plan was used as a political weapon, offering aid to countries that replaced a communist government with a Western one. This left out countries within the Soviet bloc, especially Soviet Russia. Western Europe was rebuilt within ten years while the Soviets, utterly decimated, struggled to build anything. However, the US still took a staunch, anti-communist stance. President Truman falsely told Congress that Russia was trying take over the world, leading to widespread panic. Congress quickly approved plans to support anti-communist governments in Greece  and Turkey, even though the governments in power in both countries had no ties to Stalin or Russia. Western dominance in the Middle East  had been passed on to the US. A document from that era, later declassified as NSC 68, showed the US's attempt to escalate the conflict between them and Russia. Although Russia was still recovering from the war and struggling to rebuild its economy (as mentioned before), the document stated that it will be the US's policy to destroy Russia's ability to make war, which Truman signed. This was essentially a declaration of war on the American's part, and the Soviets could do nothing but respond by escalating their defense spendings to protect themselves from the American threat.The United States wanted to keep communism from spreading to Western Europe. Containment of communism. From the end of WW2 to 1989 when the Berlin Wall  fell the foreign policy of the United States was to contain communism. The result was keeping troops in Europe  so if the Russians decided to invade they could be stopped, the United States entering Southeast Asia and the Vietnam War , and the Cuban boycott for 60 years are just a few examples of the policy of containment.
